Chop Hunger I

Masbia Soup Kitchen Network had its first Chop Hunger event on the terrace of the Lincoln Square Synagogue in Manhattan on Wednesday, August 12th, 2015. This inaugural Chop Hunger event was a thrilling and exciting challenge inspired by the hardships the Masbia Soup Kitchen Network has experienced over the years.

This sensational event showcased some of the best cooking talent in the culinary arena. The host for the evening was Emmy award winning TV producer, Chef Avi Levy of Avi’s Kosher Kitchen, and the chefs were cookbook authors, Leah Koenig, Poopa Dweck, and Levana Kirschenbaum. The challenge was to see if these chefs could go up against Masbia’s own Chef Ruben Diaz by recreating their version of his impromptu, off-the-cuff meals that he created using random and/or unusual ingredients. The finished dish needed to be prepared in 30 minutes or less using a few simple items and a mystery ingredient.

The judges were Naftali Hanau, CEO of Grow & Behold; Shifra Klein, now Editor-In-Chief of Fleishigs magazine; and Liza Schoenfein, currently author of the blog Life, Death & Dinner.

The event featured a fabulous buffet that highlighted ten of Masbia’s most intriguing culinary adventures, and included rustic soups, salad, almond-scented rice, and a choice of chicken or fish.
